Nonyl acetate is the acetate ester of nonan-1-ol found in alcoholic beverages. It is found naturally in apples, bergamot oil, and citrus fruits. Nonyl acetate is less dense than water and insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits use of nonyl acetate as a food additive for direct addition to food for human consumption. Nonyl acetate is used as flavoring agent and adjuvant in the food and beverages industry and as emollient and perfuming agent in the cosmetics industry. Nonyl acetate also finds application as a cleaning agent.
